Freebie Friday 9/21

Later in the day, I know, but it's all good :)

Today we're going to jump in to B/W conversions. A beginners quick tutorial on using the channel mixer to do B/W conversions. If you've ever seen the vast array of methods people use to make B/W and wondered where the heck to start, hopefully this will give you a good base of how to use one adjustment layer to achieve a bunch of different looks.

I am having way too much fun with the new tutorial video recording software, I know I'm a total dork, but don't hold it against me okay?

I'm hosting the video on my own webserver for now, hopefully it can handle it.. keep your fingers crossed! PLEASE let me know asap if you have any problems viewing the video.  It should be full screen, all sorts of goodness.

GO HERE TO VIEW THE TUTORIAL

After you view the Tutorial you can grab the Week's freebie.. A quick set of B/W conversions using the channel mixer and an S curve boost. Again, I'm demonstrating what I'm doing in the tutorial, so watch it before you snag the actions.. I'll know, I've got special action tracers that will track you if you don't view it......... For real, I do :)

Grab the freebies HERE

Now keep in mind.. these are just a starting off point for your conversions.. Feel free to add/subtract/butcher/etc the actions.. Make them your own. Let me know if you have any problems or questions

Also, remember to leave me a comment, hello, suggestion, whatever in the comments and you may win your choice of action sets (Winner will be posted on Monday, so check back then!)

Have a great weekend everyone! :)

I would love to view your tutorials, but I can't. I have dial-up so I can't watch videos, and even if I could watch them my speakers are broken so I can't hear them. I would love to view your tutorials and I will when I have a chance to get on a friends computer. Thanks for the actions.

Thank you so much Kylie! I've always wondered how the channel mixed worked! This just totally opened up a whole new black and white world for me! Thank you!!!

Loved the "phaunt thoughts" that popped in during the tutorial. Definitely makes you remember the key points. The software your using is great as well. I like the zooming in and out. It's much easier to see the details of what your doing when you zoom in on it.

Thanks again for taking the time to share! I appreciate knowing more about the channel mixer.

Once again, you rock!! You should really make your own fonts so that you could call them Phaunt Fonts. OK I'm a nerd, but I would so buy them just for the sake of the name... hahaha. Anywho, your awesome. Keep on doing your thing, I love it!

I already knew this one, but it's fabulous for anybody who doesn't have CS3 (CS3 has a "black and white" adjustment layer to die for).

Is there any hope for that grunge borders tutorial?

Oh man, I was sooooooooooooo scared of B&W conversions my almost 3 years of doing photography! I can't beleive how much this has changed things! Although I love actions, I'll like understanding what they do alot more. Thank you so much for that awesome tutorial. Wow.

I'm not a Marine's wife.
I don't have a daughter or sister named Katie or Kylie.
We've never known eachother or spoken to each other on a forum or messageboard.

But I do love these actions. A tip for digging deeper on the B/W actions subject. I love duotones and chocolates (I never like people who don't love chocolates)
A b/w mixed with some candy would be cool... Like strawberry B/W, A vanilla b/w, And of ofcourse a choco b/w etc.
Got to go... I'm kinda hungry now.

Now I'm almost one of those "smart" photoshop users! Thanks! I'm going to practice with these... You definitely have the gift of teaching.

Shawfam said...

Thank you, thank you, thank you. From someone that is teaching themselves Photoshop - I was one of those people that steered clear of channels as they were for the "smart people" that knew what they were doing. Now I am one of those smart people and it is all thanks to you. I love knowing how to do this from scratch now - thanks so much. I love actually knowing what to do with an action and why instead of just tweaking blindly to find what looks right. I simply can't thank you enough.

My world is a much calmer place thanks to you Kylie! B&W and I never have been friends, its always been a love/hate relationship - I LOVE B&W but I can never get it right, so I hate doing it. NOW, I think I can feel the love/love.....all thanks to you Kylie. You are my savior :)
